Dr. Nisha Malhotra leads the research team at the Birth Place Lab, where she advances data-driven inquiry, policy analysis, and knowledge translation to promote equity and justice in maternal health. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland and brings interdisciplinary expertise in economic analysis, public policy, and health equity. Her research focuses on perinatal care and the social determinants that shape maternal health experiences, particularly among underserved and racialized communities. Dr. Malhotra plays a key role in national studies examining respectful maternity care and systemic disparities in healthcare access.

Formerly a tenured Associate Professor of Teaching at UBC’s Vancouver School of Economics, Dr. Malhotra is deeply committed to inclusive education and student mentorship. She has led numerous initiatives that integrate applied research with community engagement, and has supervised a wide range of graduate and undergraduate research projects across disciplines. Her academic and professional work reflects a strong dedication to social justice and evidence-informed policy in both education and healthcare.
